Fascinating Facts About Letters

Explore interesting trivia about letters and alphabets from around the world.

Most Common Letters

In English, the most frequently used letter is 'E', followed by 'T', 'A', 'O', and 'I'. The letter 'E' accounts for about 11% of all letters in typical English text.

Rarest Letters

The least common letters in English are 'Q', 'Z', 'X', 'J', and 'K'. The letter 'Z' appears in only about 0.07% of English words, making it over 150 times rarer than 'E'.

Alphabet Origins

Our modern alphabet originated from the Phoenician alphabet around 1200 BCE, which was later adapted by the Greeks and then the Romans to create the Latin alphabet we use today.

Newest Letter

The letter 'J' is the most recent addition to the English alphabet, only becoming distinct from 'I' during the 1500s. Before that, 'I' and 'J' were considered variations of the same letter.

Letter Values

In Scrabble, the highest-value letters are Q and Z (10 points each), followed by J and X (8 points each). These values were assigned based on the difficulty of using these letters in words.

World's Alphabets

The English alphabet has 26 letters, but other alphabets vary greatly in size. The Rotokas alphabet (Papua New Guinea) has only 12 letters, while the Khmer alphabet (Cambodia) has 74 letters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our Random Letter Generator.

Our Random Letter Generator uses cryptographically secure random number generation algorithms to ensure truly random and unpredictable results. Each letter has an equal probability of being selected (unless you've chosen specific options like vowels only), making the output suitable for games, educational activities, and even statistical applications.

Yes! Simply uncheck the "Allow duplicate letters" option in the generator settings. This ensures that each letter appears only once in your results. Keep in mind that when generating without duplicates, the maximum number of letters is limited by your selected letter type (26 for all letters, 5 for vowels only, 21 for consonants only).

After generating your letters, click the "Save" button to store them in your browser's local storage. Your saved results will appear in the "Saved Results" section below the generator. You can also click the "Copy" button to copy the letters to your clipboard for pasting into another application. Saved results persist between browser sessions but are specific to your device.

In English, vowels are the letters A, E, I, O, and U (and sometimes Y, though our generator considers Y a consonant). Vowels create open sounds formed without blocking airflow. Consonants are all the other letters (B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z) and produce sounds by restricting airflow in some way.

Our generator allows you to create between 1 and 100 random letters at once. If you need more, you can generate multiple sets and combine them. When generating without duplicates, the maximum is limited by your letter type selection (26 for all letters, 5 for vowels, 21 for consonants).
